NEW! JUST RELEASED! History of Hawley, Pennsylvania, Volume I I by Peter Becker, edited by WHS.

With over 450 pages, hundreds of historical photos, and a 21-page index, we are

pleased to offer this second and final volume in the series.

Continue the walk through the history of Hawley and join Peter and his “Board of

History Consultants” (locals who had first-hand knowledge), as he worked so diligently, over the years,

to preserve, compile and recount these stories.

Read about the service of the many Veterans (and their sacrifices), that Hawley produced. Read

about the histories of the schools, churches, neighborhoods and special biographies that have

been included (so many interesting people!). Read about the history behind some of the families still

currently working and living in Hawley. Read about the fires and floods. And about the arts and

entertainment and the parks and recreation.

Combined with the History of Hawley, Volume I (for a total of 850 pages), these books

are a treasure that a town the size of Hawley is extremely fortunate to have, thanks to the work

of Peter and the kernel of the idea, a decade ago, that WHS first had – to preserve this history in

the form of a book – or two!

History of Hawley, Volume I by Peter Becker, edited by WHS.

With over 350 pages, over 150 photos, and a 15 page index, we are

pleased to be able to tell the stories of Hawley and its citizens, from

the earliest days when the area was known as “Paupack Eddy”,

through the days of the canal and gravity railroad, the glass

factories and textile mills, and into current times, when the

town greatly benefited from the creation of the new Lake

Wallenpaupack, over 100 years ago. Enduring 5 fires and 6 floods, this is the story of how the small town survived

and met each new challenge.

Price: $37.74 + $2.26 PA sales tax = $40.00.

Here’s a wonderful opportunity for you to own the beautiful, historic lament, written in 1914 when the old river, like the old settlers, was soon to be no more.

Helen Cooke (nee Killam) was a native to the area and her ancestors were among those first settlers who came to Paupack from Connecticut in 1774.  Having remembered many oral histories – which Helen referred to as “traditions” – she told of those stories in this beautiful poem, written in the trendy style-of-the-day of Nathaniel Hawthorne. Helen added to the poem in 1926, after the lake was complete.

WHS thanks Hawley Public Library for their generous contribution of this book to us.

1887 History of the Settlement by Ephraim Killam

. This history was compiled by Ephraim Killam who was descended from some of the original settlers to Paupack in 1774. Because of the detail and depth of this work, Ephraim must have compiled it over the course of very many years. The first part of the book details the history of the Wallenpaupack settlement. The second, and larger, part is a unique compendium (genealogy) of family trees of the original settlers - going forward from the time of the first settlers. The volume is completely indexed by name.

Cobwebs by Harriet Gertrude Watres (Stella of Lackawanna). Harriet wrote under the pen name of Stella of Lackawanna from about 1850 until just before her death on March 2, 1886. Her son, Lewis Arthur Watres, published her collection of poetry in 1887. She was well-known in the Scranton-Wilkes-Barre area during her lifetime, and some of her poems appeared in the local papers as late as 1920. A few of her poems were set to music, most notably "Wyoming" which was sung at the 100th anniversary commemoration of the Wyoming Massacre. This is a complete second edition, with additional biographical information from the Lackawanna Historical Society, and the Watres family. A review in the Scranton Republican on April 27, 1903 stated that "there have been few poets who have equaled "Stella" in pureness and beauty of work."
